Why would you need a bowel stent?

There are a few reasons why someone might need a bowel stent:

- To treat a bowel obstruction. A stent can be placed to open up a blocked area of the intestine and allow contents to pass through again. This is often done instead of surgery for blockages caused by cancer, scar tissue, diverticulitis, etc.

- To treat a bowel perforation or fistula. A stent can be used to seal a hole or abnormal connection in the intestines and allow it to heal.

- After bowel surgery. Stents may be placed after procedures like removing a section of the intestine due to cancer in order to help the remaining portions heal back together.

- To treat strictures or narrowing of the bowel. Strictures can be caused by inflammation, scar tissue, or cancer. A stent can widen the narrowed section.

- To reinforce an anastomosis. If two portions of the bowel were reconnected, a stent across the join can provide extra support while it heals.

- To treat leaks. A stent may be placed to close off an area with a leak of bowel contents and give it a chance to seal. 

So in summary, bowel stents are small mesh tubes inserted via endoscopy or surgery that provide structural support and keep openings patent in situations of obstruction, perforation, stricture, or leak. They allow diseased sections to heal or regain function.
