What equipment is used in angioplasty?

Angioplasty, also known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), is a minimally invasive procedure used to open narrowed or blocked blood vessels, primarily coronary arteries. The procedure involves several specialized pieces of equipment, including:

### 1. Catheterization Lab Equipment

- **Fluoroscopy Machine**: Provides real-time X-ray imaging to guide the placement of catheters and other instruments within the blood vessels.

- **Angiography Suite**: Includes a range of imaging equipment used to visualize the blood vessels before, during, and after the procedure.

### 2. Catheters

- **Guide Catheters**: Large, hollow tubes inserted into the artery to provide a pathway for other instruments. They come in various shapes and sizes to navigate different anatomies.

- **Balloon Catheters**: Equipped with an inflatable balloon at the tip. The balloon is inflated at the site of the blockage to open the artery.

- **Aspiration Catheters**: Used to remove thrombus (clot) from the blood vessel.

### 3. Guidewires

- Thin, flexible wires that guide the catheters through the blood vessels. They come in different materials and stiffness levels to navigate through complex anatomies.

### 4. Stents

- **Bare-Metal Stents (BMS)**: Mesh-like tubes made of metal used to keep the artery open after balloon angioplasty.

- **Drug-Eluting Stents (DES)**: Similar to BMS but coated with medication to prevent restenosis (re-narrowing of the artery).

### 5. Sheaths and Introducers

- **Vascular Sheaths**: Short tubes inserted into the artery to facilitate the introduction of catheters and other devices.

- **Introducer Needles**: Used to gain initial access to the artery, usually in the groin or wrist.

### 6. Inflation Devices

- **Manual Inflation Devices**: Syringe-like devices used to manually inflate the balloon catheter.

- **Automated Inflation Devices**: Provide controlled inflation and deflation of the balloon catheter.

### 7. Imaging Contrast Media

- **Contrast Agents**: Injected into the blood vessels to enhance visibility under X-ray imaging. They help in identifying blockages and guiding the procedure.

### 8. Hemostatic Devices

- **Closure Devices**: Used to close the arterial puncture site after the procedure, reducing the risk of bleeding.

- **Compression Devices**: Apply pressure to the puncture site to achieve hemostasis.

### 9. Monitoring Equipment

- **Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG)**: Monitors the heart's electrical activity during the procedure.

- **Blood Pressure Monitors**: Continuously measure blood pressure to ensure patient stability.

### 10. Ancillary Tools

- **Scalpel and Scissors**: For minor incisions and adjustments.

- **Sterile Drapes and Gowns**: To maintain a sterile environment.

- **Local Anesthetics**: To numb the access site.

### 11. Emergency Equipment

- **Defibrillator**: For managing cardiac arrest or severe arrhythmias.

- **Emergency Drugs**: Such as epinephrine and atropine, used to manage complications during the procedure.

These tools and devices work together to ensure the angioplasty procedure is performed safely and effectively, allowing for the successful treatment of blocked or narrowed arteries.
