The two main types of stents are.
1.Bare Metal Stents (BMS)
- Made of materials like stainless steel or cobalt alloy.
- Have a mesh-like tube design that expands to hold the vessel open.
- Provide good radial strength to resist compression.
- Tend to have higher rates of restenosis (re-narrowing) due to tissue growth through the stent openings.
- Often used as temporary scaffolds in smaller arteries.
2. Drug-Eluting Stents (DES)
- Have a polymer coating that slowly releases a drug.
- Drug helps suppress cell proliferation and prevent restenosis. Common drugs are sirolimus and paclitaxel.
- Reduced risk of restenosis compared to BMS.
- More expensive than BMS.- Becoming the standard of care for most patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.
- Also exist as bioabsorbable stents that completely dissolve over time.
The choice between BMS vs. DES depends on the clinical scenario, patient factors, and cost considerations. BMS tend to be used in simpler lesions, while DES are preferred for more complex disease to reduce restenosis risk.
