Is Flow Diverter safe?

Flow diverters can be safe and effective when used appropriately by experienced neurointerventionalists to treat specific types of brain aneurysms. However, like any medical procedure, there are potential risks and complications associated with flow diversion that should be carefully considered.

Some of the potential risks and complications of flow diverters include:

  1. Thromboembolic events: Blood clots may form on the surface of the stent or within the blood vessels, leading to strokes or other neurological complications.

  2. In-stent stenosis: Narrowing of the blood vessel at the site of the stent deployment may occur, potentially restricting blood flow and increasing the risk of stroke or ischemia.

  3. Perforation or dissection: Manipulation of the stent within the blood vessels can sometimes cause injury to the vessel wall, leading to bleeding or tearing of the artery.

  4. Delayed aneurysm rupture: Although rare, there have been reported cases of aneurysm rupture occurring after the placement of a flow diverter, possibly due to incomplete aneurysm occlusion or inadequate flow diversion.

  5. Device migration or malposition: The stent may migrate from its intended position or become malpositioned within the blood vessel, compromising its effectiveness and potentially requiring additional interventions.

  6. Infection: As with any invasive procedure, there is a risk of infection at the site of stent placement or along the pathway of the catheter used for delivery.

  7. Allergic reaction or hypersensitivity: Some patients may experience allergic reactions or hypersensitivity to the materials used in the stent, leading to inflammation or other adverse reactions.

Despite these risks, flow diversion can offer significant benefits for certain patients with complex or wide-necked brain aneurysms, including reduced risk of rupture and long-term occlusion of the aneurysm. The decision to undergo flow diversion should be made by a specialized medical team after careful consideration of the individual patient's condition, the characteristics of the aneurysm, and the potential risks and benefits of the procedure. Patients should also be closely monitored during and after the procedure for any signs of complications, so that prompt intervention can be provided if necessary.
